#30 - Artemise Ploegaerts

I work with different media such as video, dance performance, and archival material. Video editing is for me a way to choreograph. When I film, I like to look at movement that comes naturally to me; from daily life or nature for instance, but also from dancers’ habits and daily practice. I studied dance at TrinityLaban in London, and choreography at ArtEZ institute of the Arts, Arnhem. I have been working for video art for several years now. I am based in Amsterdam.
My practice stresses the link between people’s moving body and their background and history. Through the making of ‘moving’ portraits, I attempt to highlight the political and socio-cultural contexts that have directly organized/shaped them. My work generally focuses on the background and experiences of female immigrants/expatriates or women with a bicultural background.
