The third episode of Trendy Tropics is here.
The film series confronts a simple paradox: Europe loves to talk about the Global South but rarely listens to it. Social media feeds overflow with opinions, outrage, and trending solidarities. Yet behind these circulating images, real lives remain abstract, distant, and almost fictional. We want to reverse the gaze. Trendy Tropics merges art and activism not to make us feel better about the world, but to see it more clearly.
On June 24th, Trendy Tropics will team up with Band Photo to host an unforgettable film concert. We will be screening the Colombian film Bicentenario (2020) while the renowned local trio, Band Photo, performs their own version of the soundtrack live.
Bicentenario, directed by Pablo Alvarez-Mesa, relies on a compelling blend of landscape cinematography, archival news footage, and oral traditions. It opens with a prologue showing 1985 archival footage of the Palace of Justice siege in Bogotá before tracking the historical route of Bolívar's army two hundred years later. It is this historical curse that Bicentenario seeks to invoke and perhaps, exorcise.
Band Photo is all about slowing down and attending to stillness in defiance of the hyper-sped brevity of contemporary media. Through a stark setup of trumpet, percussion, and sampler, the trio plays within a live echo chamber of their own devising. They attempt to retune their tempos to geological timeframes, breaking free from the structured restraints demanded by techno-culture. The resulting performance is a sonic remedy, confronting the addictive bombardment of hyper-information from the outside world.
